Socially Engaged Art Practice

Outdoor, gallery and school setting engagements

Young Artists Club. As Artist Educator I ran a weekly art group at Orleans House Gallery (2015-2019) for children aged 8-12, exploring art and the world we live in through research, drawing, dance, music,  print, sculpture, painting, projection-mapping, land art, construction, cast-making, writing and film-making.

Octagon club was a group of young people with additional needs working out of Orleans House Gallery. I worked with the group from 2008 to its closure in 2018.

Light (2013) – We began with a sensory exploration of different materials, colour, reflection, perspectives and looking. We made designs, then set tissue paper in glue, creating stained glass windows, framed and installed the pieces in the gallery grounds.

Beyond the Trees (2015) – This project explores the need for ecologically sustainable ways of art-making through an installation made within an active dialogue with the Gallery’s surrounding woods. Exploring painting, print making and sculpture-installations underpinned by the use recycled materials to make a giant tree. We also explored map-making in the gallery grounds. Together we are exploring the spaces between ourselves and the local flora and fauna, bridging conversations of within, without.

From the Outside In (2016) – see page 3.

Dance, Art and the Body (2016) – We looked at various body based art practices. The young people co-curated the end of project show.

Treasures on our doorstep (2017) – Interacting with the local area we asked what we love about where we live, what do we need to look after or create for the future.

Creations (fashion and textile) (2018-2019) – Making our own patterns, costumes and designs to express our unique selves.

Transitions Art Group is an established group of young adult artists all of whom have some additional need. Most of the group have graduated from an early beginning in the Octagon Club which makes for a very special group of Artists. In 2016 both Transitions and Octagon explored different themes around ‘science of the body’ in an integrative art-science project awarded by the Wellcome Trust.
